Any violence that is carried out through sexual means or forcefully targeting a person sexually is considered to be rape. Sexual violence can be taken place in different form and can include rape, incest, childhood sexual abuse, sexual harrassment, rape during armed conflict and many more. It affects people of cultural background and people of all ages.
Most of the rape victims drop out off investigation as they do not want to pursue a prosecution even when a suspect has been identified. The reason most times to avoid any form of stigmatization by society, religion, friends and family.
In an interview posted by SVTV Africa on Youtube, a lady identified herself to be a victim of a rape case but her mother refused to pursue the case due to financial issues.
According to the lady, she was sexually assaulted by a guy in her neighborhood when she was 16 years old. The guy was later arrested but after his bail, he will physically abuse her whenever he sees her around the neighborhood.
She explains that the guy’s family had money so his mother convinced her mother to settle the case out of court. She stated her mother took the money and settled the case out of court and was later rejected by her mother.
